The programme is offered as a one-subject Master programme. It will provide an interdisciplinary approach to human-environment relations, which entails diverse methodological skills and capacities to operate and assess methodologies and theories of various disciplines. The programme is modularized and assessed according to the European credit transfer system (ECTS)-standard (credit points = CP).

"The proposed MA degree is highly innovative. No comparable MA degree is being offered at any other academic institution in Germany. From an international perspective, the Cologne MA programme is highly competitive. The Master is integrated into the University of Cologne's long-term interdisciplinary research activities on African livelihoods that have been nationally and internationally highly successful for many years" (Quote from the university evaluation of proposed BA and MA programmes, AQAS, 2007).
