How to apply for the PhD program?

The first step when aiming to pursue a PhD at the Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology in Cologne, is to think of a topic of research and to find a supervisor associated with the department.

The next step is to be admitted as a PhD-student. Admission is granted through the doctoral board of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities. Applications for enrollment must be submitted to the a.r.t.e.s. Graduate School for the Humanities Cologne.

There are different models of doctoral studies. A PhD can either be pursued as an individual project (regular track) or as part of a structured and interdisciplinary program, which in some cases includes a scholarship (integrated track). The Graduate School a.r.t.e.s. provides information about different funding possibilities.

International PhD-students also have to enroll as a student (not apply!) at the International Office after being admitted by the doctoral board.

A (non-obligatory) last step is to contact the EthnoDocs, to get connected to fellow PhD-students at the department.
