Dissertation Award for Christoph Lange

Christoph Lange was awarded with his thesis "Decolonizing the Arabian Horse. The Breeding, Circulation and Certification of the Straight Egyptian Arabian in the 21st Century" on 29 September 2021 as one of two second prize winners with the Dissertation Award of the German Society for Social and Cultural Anthropology (DGSKA).

Christoph Lange received his doctorate from the University of Cologne at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology. The independent committee that decided on the award described Christoph Lange's excellent thesis as follows:

"Through an exciting opening, the author draws the reader into the spell of a detective story that, instead of a clearly defined research location on the Arabian Peninsula, poses riddles and spins a global, intricate, tangled web that is nevertheless connected by the horse. This is an extraordinarily exciting ethnography - stretched between contemporary debates, future challenges and classical concepts."

The other second place winner is:

Boris Wille: "Democracy as political culture. Popular politics during the 2012 crisis in the Maldives" (Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg).

The first-placed prize winner is:

Sabrina Maurus: "Battles over State Making on a Frontier. Dilemmas of Schooling, Young People and Agro-Pastoralism in Hamar, South West Ethiopia" (University of Bayreuth)

The DGSKA Dissertation Prize was established by the General Assembly in 2017 and has been awarded every two years since then. Nominations can be made for outstanding anthropological doctoral theses from the entire German-speaking region that are based on ethnographic research or deal with topics in the history of the discipline. The DGSKA was founded in 1929 as the "Gesellschaft für Völkerkunde" and is a professional association of anthropologists and individuals and institutions interested in anthropology. In 2017, the professional association was renamed the German Society for Social and Cultural Anthropology at its biennial conference in Berlin. It currently has 840 members.
