New DFG Collaborative Research Center

In view of rapidly advancing globalization, the CRC/Transregio 228 "Future in Rural Africa: Making the Future and Socio-ecological Transformation" examines how processes of agricultural intensification and the expansion of nature conservation can be anchored in rural Africa.

How do socio-ecological changes in rural Africa affect the seemingly contradictory, but often interwoven processes of increased land use by humans and the extension of nature reserves?

Researchers from geography, social and cultural anthropology, agricultural sciences and other disciplines analyze how different ideas of the future affect land use change. They also pay special attention to unforeseeable developments such as crop failures, droughts and violent conflicts characteristic of rural Africa. The focus is on areas in eastern and southern Africa.

The DFG will fund the CRC in the next four years with a total of about 10 million euros.
The Collaborative Research Center of the SFB is the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn, speaker is Prof. Dr. Detlef Müller-Mahn. The University of Cologne is further applicant.

Also involved in this joint project are the Bonn International Center for Conversion (BICC), University of Münster, Charité at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and numerous cooperation partners in Africa.
